Take the 30-Day Crochet Challenge with Kristin
Posted on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 1:00PMSpring is just around the corner, and I really want a big picnic blanket for taking to the park, the beach, and outdoor concerts. But, who has time, right? Crochet blankets are my favorite finished objects (FO), but the time it takes to make such huge projects can be daunting.
Until now! I broke it down into bite size, manageable pieces. I figured that if I could commit to a 12" square every day, in 30 days I would have 30 - 12" squares. That would be 6 squares wide by 5 squares long, or 6 feet wide by 5 feet long. That's a pretty good size! I think I can fit quite a few people at my picnic!
I wrote a pattern a few years ago for a checkered race flag blanket. That blanket was sadly destroyed by a naughty doggy a couple of years ago, and I have been meaning to crochet a new one.
To ensure rapid results, I decided to use double strands of worsted weight yarn (something machine washable is a MUST), and used a 10mm crochet hook. My granny squares turned out to be 12" square after only 6 rounds!! I went to JoAnn Craft Store and bought Caron One Pound Balls on sale. A very special 6 year old decided on a rainbow palette this time. ;-)
Here is my first square after 20 minutes:![]()
20 minutes a day!! I can definitely commit to 20 minutes a day. Won't you join me for 20 minutes a day in making a 30-Day Crochet Picnic Blanket in time for Memorial Day and summer? You can go out and buy the yarn, or even use stash yarn. Just make sure to double up if the yarn isn't that thick.
