Sea Flower Shawl Pattern

The shawl is worked from the center out, starting with dpns (double pointed needles) for the 6-petal flower. When there are sufficient stitches, switch to cicular needles for the remainder of the shawl. The shape is between a half-circle and a cape. This gives you great shaping and the shawl sits effortlessly on your shoulders. The edging is worked sideways, picking up live shawl stitches as you go. The sample is worked in only 3 skeins of Tilli Tomas Voile de la Mer (70/30 silk/Seacell) laceweight yarn. (290 yds per 50 gms).

I created this belted, crochet lace cape while preparing for the taping of Crochet Corner on Knitting Daily TV, season 400. I wanted to wear a new piece that would be flattering on me. My theory was that the belted cape offers the illusion of shaping due to the placement of the belt. If you cinch your waist with the minimum amount of fabric required and leave the bulk to the “sleeves” the ratio of more sleeve to waist suggests a thin waist.
You can see me wearing the cape on episode 407 and in the show’s introduction.

The pattern is written for a hip length cape that is approximately 24” long. If you want a longer cape, you can either work another repeat of the increases (12 rows), or you could work the regular pattern in a thicker yarn and larger hook (perhaps a dk weight yarn and H/8 hook).

For a more relaxed look, the cape is equally as pretty without belting.

The pattern included line by line instructions, charts and lots of detailed photos. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF file that you will receive via email after transaction is completed. Usually within a few hours.

Pattern requirements:

1200 yards of laceweight yarn. I used Wagtail Yarn's 100% Kid Mohair 4ply in medium blue (3 skeins)

G/6 (4mm) crochet hook

Barefoot Beach Shawl Knit Lace Pattern

I knit the sample shawl at the quiet and reclusive Barefoot Beach in SW Florida and thought it appropriate to name the project after the inspiring knitting location. The rolling surf softly crashes onto a beach filled with seashells of many varieties, shapes and sizes.

I chose an addicting stitch pattern that has a repeat of 5 rows, so by nature of an odd number row-repeat, it is a reversible stitch pattern. There is a different stitch count on each row of the repeat because the number of sts per repeat is heavily decreases on one row, then slowly increased on the following 3rd and 4th rows until you achieve the original stitch count per repeat. It sounds a lot more complicated than it really is, and I included the stitch count for every row of the pattern. The pretty scalloped edge is created by diligently blocking each repeat of the easy picot bind off.

Due to the stretchy nature of the combination of this stitch pattern and tape yarn, the entire shawl requires only 250 yards of yarn and the generous sizes shawl requires only 80 rows. In the realm of lace shawls, this is a relatively quick project. I knit the sample shawl in just one weekend!

Shawl requirements:
250 yards of tape ribbon yarn (sample shown with Tahki Sahara)
US10 (6mm) circular knitting needles (36" or longer to accommodate large number of stitches on needles -- worked in rows not rounds)
Must be able to knit, yo, knit into space 1 row below and slip stitch
